ACNM: Narrative Feature on Midwives & Doulas

This session highlighted how collaborative care models strengthen outcomes for birthing people. The discussion brought together birthing professionals to clarify their distinct scopes of practice and demonstrate how these roles intersect to create safer, more equitable birth experiences. The session emphasized that midwives provide comprehensive, holistic reproductive and primary care while doulas offer continuous informational, physical, and emotional support before, during, and after birth. When these approaches are aligned, families benefit from coordinated, person-centered care that addresses medical needs as well as social, cultural, and structural factors that shape the birth experience. We focused on the importance of integrating community-based doula programs into broader maternity care systems within hospitals and community settings to strengthen communication, improve patient support, and advance birth equity for populations facing disproportionate barriers.
